Newcastle University Business School Events Programme Announced

This month marks the beginning of the spring events programme at Newcastle University Business School, offering attendees the chance to gain insights from business and organisations throughout the region and beyond.

From February – April 2012, the Business School will see some well-known names from the business world including James Ramsbotham, Chief Executive North East Chamber of Commerce, and the world-renowned Professor Scott Shane of Case Western Reserve University.

February 2012

Title: James Ramsbotham – The North East Economy 'Update'
When: Tuesday 14th February – 6.30pm
Where: Newcastle University Business School, Barrack Road

Description: The Business School has teamed up with University of Newcastle upon Tyne Graduates' Society to offer the Business School community, consisting of students, graduates, staff and friends of the School, the chance to hear from James Ramsbotham.

James Ramsbotham will deliver his 'State of the Region' address at this eagerly anticipated event. Not only will this event provide the opportunity to hear from a truly engaging speaker but also to network with students, graduates and regional business people. Catering and refreshments will also be provided.

Title: Productivity and a "Total Delivered Cost" approach to growth
When: Thursday 16th February – 5.30pm - 6.30pm
Where: Newcastle University Business School, 5 Barrack Road, NE1 4SE

Description: Hosted by Trevor Mann, Manufacturing Senior Vice President, Nissan International. SA, this public lecture focuses on productivity and a "Total Delivered Cost" approach to growth.

Newcastle University Business School, in conjunction with INSIGHTS Public Lectures, is pleased to announce a public lecture, the first to be held at the new Business School building.

Trevor Mann will explain how Nissan Motor Manufacturing Ltd. in Sunderland grew from almost extinction to being the largest car manufacturing plant in the history of the UK auto Industry and the kingpin for Nissan growth in Europe.

Title: The Herbert Loebl Export Academy: First Time and Young Exporters: Interactive Road Mapping Exercise
When: Wednesday 22nd February – 9am- 11.30am
Where: Newcastle University Business School

This is the first event in the Herbert Loebl Export Academy series and focuses on the basics of exporting, market research and case studies of exporting in practice.

Dr Herbert Loebl, an alumnus and honorary graduate of Newcastle University, founded the Joyce-Loebl Electronics and Scientific Instrument Group and has played a leading role in developing the economic fortunes of the North East region.

At the 2010 North East Business Executive of the Year Awards ceremony he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 2012 Herbert Loebl Export Academy builds upon the 2011 Herbert Loebl Export Academy programme. Delivered in partnership with RTC North and UKTI, the Herbert Loebl Export Academy offers regional young and developing businesses the chance to explore with expert practitioners how and why they could consider exporting and the practicalities of getting their business export ready.

Title: Professor Scott Shane – Commercialising Science
When: Monday 12th – Wednesday 14th March
Where: Newcastle University Business School

Commercialising science isn't all about writing business plans, doing licensing deals and leaving the lab behind.

Newcastle University Business School and Newcastle Biomedicine are offering a unique opportunity to learn about 'Commericalising Science' from world renowned expert Professor Scott Shane (Case Western Reserve University) and Dr Lucy Foley (Newcastle University School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials).

Scott Shane is the A. Malachi Mixon III Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies at Case Western Reserve University and a Visiting Distinguished International Scholar at Newcastle University Business School.

The author of Academic Entrepreneurship: University Spinoffs and Wealth Creation and numerous scholarly articles on university technology transfer, Professor. Shane has spent over a decade studying university spin-offs and technology transfer.

He has consulted to numerous large and small organisations on these topics and has taught this course for several years to research scientists and medical doctors at Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Shane is also an angel investor and member of the Northcoast Angel Network.

Lucy Foley is a Teaching Fellow in Biobusiness, School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Material. Lucy joined Newcastle from UCL where she trained in Biochemical Engineering. Lucy's research, working across the university to realize the widespread adoption of cell therapies, highlighted the need for a more productive form of enterprise training for research staff.

During this intensive two and a half-day course, Professor Scott Shane and Dr Lucy Foley will offer unique insights into how to generate commercial value from your research.

So throw away your preconceptions about commercial science and generic business courses, forget business plans and profit and loss sheets. Come and learn how to identify the commercial value in translational research from a world-leading expert.

Nicholson's Transport fell victim to an elaborate 'phishing' con where identity details were taken from its website to create fake letters.
