Port of Tyne

As one of the UK's largest trust ports and North East England's major deep river port, the Port of Tyne acknowledges that its responsibility as a major player is to open the region to the global market.
Traditionally, the Port of Tyne was famous for its coal exports but the radical changes in the UK's mining industry during the 1990s created an urgent need to diversify if it was to grow and remain an important international player. Today, the results of a decade of development and £100 million of investment are clearly seen in the port's five commercial business areas – bulk & conventional cargo, car terminals, cruise & ferries, logistics and estates - its three rail terminals, its modern international cruise and passenger terminal building and its growing cruise business; all adding greater value to North East England.
Now very much a case of "carrying coals to Newcastle" the port's bulk and conventional cargo business also handles grain, scrap, steel, forest products and other cargoes. In particular, the volume of imported coal, increasing dramatically from zero in 2003 to 3.0 million tonnes in 2008, has earned the port its place as the UK's fourth largest coal importer.
As a dynamic business, the Port of Tyne's mission is to provide a vibrant and sustainable Port of Tyne. As an NECC Partner, it is committed to promoting the businesses and communities of North East England to an international audience.
Working with NECC
Port of Tyne has worked in support of NECC to raise the profile of the Go Global international trade campaign. Launched in conjunction with The Journal, Go Global was an initiative launched to encourage business across the North East that were not currently engaged in trading overseas to look at foreign markets as new opportunities for business development.
Port of Tyne and NECC continue to address measures across the region in order to maintain connectivity and are invovled with regoinal transport policy in line with the objectives of the NECC's Manifesto.
