CE marking to stay indefinitely
Date published:
A major problem for the Government is that it has put off dealing with a number of Brexit-related problems only for the new dates to then appear with still no solutions in sight. For example, industry was told that the new UKCA mark (UK conformity assessed) would come into force in December 2024 but many companies had become used to the well-established CE marking and were unsure how the change would affect potential exports to the EU.
Now the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has announced that British firms will be able to continue using CE marking indefinitely, alongside the UKCA mark. This intervention will, it said, ensure that businesses no longer face uncertainty over the regulations and can cut back on unnecessary costs “freeing them up to focus on innovation and growth”. The decision affects a whole range of regulations including those on: toys; pyrotechnics; simple pressure vessels; electromagnetic compatibility; non-automatic weighing instruments; measuring instruments; equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX); radio equipment; lifts; machinery; and personal protective equipment (PPE).
