John McCabe, CEO at the North East Chamber of Commerce, said:

“North East exporters may cautiously welcome today’s news as an initial improvement in trading conditions with one of our most important international partners. For manufacturers in our region, particularly in the automotive, steel and machinery sectors, this could mark a turning point provided the detail delivers real-world benefit.

“While today’s announcement falls short of a comprehensive trade deal, we will be looking closely at what is agreed, especially on timing and implementation. Businesses value clarity on how and when changes will take effect, as well as the implications for future access and regulation, so the detail will be important. The Prime Minister has described this deal as historic; for exporters in sectors beyond those highlighted today, we look forward to supporting them as this new framework develops.

“Taken together with this week’s UK-India trade agreement and the renewed focus on resetting our trading relationship with the EU, there is a degree of momentum building behind efforts to open up new opportunities for exporters. We will continue to work with the government and our international partners to ensure that future trade arrangements with the US and other key global markets reflect the needs of businesses in the North East.”
