Following the release of a new report by the North East Child Poverty Commission, Chamber policy manager, Marianne O’Sullivan comments:

“Data from the North East Child Poverty Commission shows that the gap between the living standards of children in the North East compared to the UK average has reached a twenty-year high. Almost two in five children in the region are living in poverty, this is the highest rate of any UK nation or region.

The North East is experiencing a steeper increase in in-work child poverty compared to the rest of the UK. This is likely to only increase due to high levels of inflation.

We support the Commission’s call that the Government commit to levelling up impact assessments of all major Government policy and spending decisions and act to improve access to affordable childcare.

The upcoming emergency budget is a key opportunity for the Government to show it is serious about the levelling up agenda. We must see action to make sure children in our region can access opportunities and have the same life chances as anyone else.”
