The North East Chamber of Commerce’s latest Partner member is revolutionising eco-friendly travel with its sustainable, all electric train service.
Headquartered in Newcastle, Lumo is an innovative open access train operator, travelling exclusively on the east coast of the UK between London and Edinburgh, via Newcastle and Morpeth.
The Chamber partnership supports Lumo’s North East roots and promotes sustainability and connectivity in the region.
Martijn Gilbert, managing director of Lumo, said: “We’re delighted to join the Chamber as a Partner member. As a local business that is passionate about the region, sustainability, and improved connectivity and transport, the partnership will enhance the great work already happening across the region to boost the local economy.”
Since its launch in 2021, Lumo has created over 100 new jobs in the North East, many linked to apprenticeships, and is currently exploring plans to operate an additional return journey every day between Newcastle and London.
Martijn added: “We are very excited to be looking at this option to grow our popular all-electric train service to and from our home city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
“The North East has a number of plans to further improve transport connectivity and the growth of Lumo will help support this and deliver more great value and sustainable journeys to more customers on our route.
“Rail has a critical role to play in decarbonising our transport network and we have played a significant part in encouraging more people to travel to and from Newcastle by train. This is bringing substantial environmental benefits while boosting the economy, as well as social benefits from our low fare model.”
Erin Newey, Chamber Partner engagement and sponsorship manager, said: “We’re thrilled that Lumo has joined as the Chamber’s 25th Partner member, representing the rail sector, which is so pivotal to the North East’s levelling up agenda.
“The company has already had an incredible impact in the region and we look forward to supporting Lumo as they look to increase their services and reach in the North East by working with local businesses and investing in local people.”
Lumo launched in 2021, emerging as an innovative train operator committed to redefining the travel experience. Passionate about sustainability and value for money fares, the company offers all-electric train travel, a 50% plant-based friendly onboard menu and a fully digital service.
The company’s fleet of five carriage all-electric Hitachi AT300 trains were assembled at Hitachi’s Newton Aycliffe factory.
