This week we caught up with the non-profit organisation to find out how they’re going further with Chamber membership.

Where are you based?

We are based all around the North East!

How many employees do you have?

We are a team of 18!

Give us a brief overview of your business.

Emmaus North East is celebrating its 15th anniversary. We are a charity based in South Tyneside that offers permanent homes training, work experience and a package of support to formerly homeless people. We develop social enterprises to offer work experience and generate income and support those facing poverty and deprivation under our solidarity objectives. Part of our work includes campaigning for change both at a local and national and being the voice of the homeless. We also have a strategy on prevention and education and are involved in many strategic partnerships and outreach activities.

Tell us about a recent business success.

Emmaus North East recently received a North East Charity Award for Outstanding Social Enterprise. Lucie’s Laundry was opened in February 2023 and is the only free community laundry in the country. So far it has helped over 6000 people facing poverty and deprivation.

We are currently celebrating the award of a 3 year contract from Durham County Council named SHAP (Single Homeless Accommodation Programme). This means that we will be offering permanent homes to 36 formerly homeless people and supporting them to move on positively with their lives.

How has being a Chamber member impacted your growth and networking opportunities?

Being a member of the North East Chamber of Commerce has raised awareness of our work and connected us with a wider network of professionals. The support and opportunities we’ve accessed through the Chamber have been invaluable for building relationships and growing our presence across the region.
