UK Government Delays Import Procedures from Northern Ireland
Date published:
The UK Government has delayed the introduction of full import procedures for goods moving from Ireland to Great Britain while discussions on the Northern Ireland Protocol continue between the UK and European Union.
The implementation of Northern Ireland protocol has been under scrutiny in 2021, following the UK’s exit from the EU.
However, the Government will continue to introduce full controls on imports from the rest of the EU from January 1st 2022, and changes to exports from Great Britain to Ireland will still apply from 1st January 2022 as planned.
Lord Frost said implementing border controls on imports from the island of Ireland is “particularly complex” while the Northern Ireland Protocol is under negotiation, and this is a pragmatic step to keep trade flowing.
