Working alongside the British Chambers of Commerce, the North East Chamber has developed a business focused response to the government’s Industrial Strategy.
Particular focus has been placed on significant growth sectors which are relevant to the North East economy; advanced manufacturing, clean energy and life sciences. The creative sector is also of significant importance to this region, and we welcome the investment announced in the Budget for the Crown Works site in Sunderland.
It is positive to see a focus on addressing skills gaps. As discussed at a recent Chamber area meeting, tackling low literacy rates in areas such as Northumberland is vital for addressing the North East’s high child poverty levels as well as future growth.
There needs to be a focus on foundational industries and the prioritisation of upskilling and reskilling with over 19s to prevent people being left behind and to create an inclusive economy.
Construction is an important sector for the North East and it’s vital that the government recognises this sector as an enabler for growth, and addresses capacity issues in planning departments.
The Chamber is committed to supporting businesses in the expansion of trade. The value of imports and exports in the North East region is £33.8bn as of 2021. It’s important the Industrial Strategy is aligned with the government’s trade strategy to encourage exports in key sectors.
The North East’s three largest exporting markets internationally are the United States, Germany and the Netherlands, with road vehicles, power generating machinery and pharmaceuticals the three largest commodity groups exported. This highlights the regional opportunities which are involved in sectors such as advanced manufacturing and life sciences.
There is still huge potential in the region’s SME community to explore and expand global trade. We need to see government strategies that support businesses to trade internationally to allow the region’s economy to grow.
We will continue to engage with members on what they need to see from the government to ensure that the voice of the North East is heard.
