Chamber response to the government’s new trade strategy

Rhiannon Bearne, deputy chief executive at the North East Chamber of Commerce, stated:
“The new Trade Strategy sets a clearer, more practical direction for UK trade policy, with strong potential benefits for the North East, where international trade continues to drive jobs, skills and investment.
“We welcome the focus on unlocking £5bn in export opportunities, expanding UK Export Finance to £80bn, and introducing tools like the Small Export Builder to better support SMEs. These practical measures reflect many of our longstanding policy asks and must now be delivered in a way that works for regional exporters on the ground.
“The emphasis on faster, sector-specific trade deals, improved trade defences, and mutual recognition of qualifications aligns well with our region’s strengths in services, green energy and advanced manufacturing. It’s also positive to see a stronger role for devolved nations and regions in shaping export support and influencing trade policy.
“We’re pleased to see the strategy sit alongside the UK’s new Industrial and Infrastructure Strategies. Together, they create a more joined-up approach to economic growth, trade and investment, something our members consistently call for.
“Ultimately, delivery will be key. Our members want to see less red tape, faster access to global markets and targeted support to help them scale internationally, not just in principle, but in practice.”
