Empowering tomorrow’s leaders: the crucial role of youth work

Emma Rundle, Business Development Manager at NE Youth, explores the transformative impact of youth work on young lives and communities.
Youth work plays a pivotal role in shaping the lives of young people and empowering them to reach their full potential. It encompasses a range of activities and interventions designed to support and engage young people in their personal, social and educational development. This knowledge blog explores the importance and transformative impact of youth work in fostering positive change, building resilience and nurturing future leaders.
NE Youth is a leading youth development charity supporting young people and youth organisations across the North East of England. We do this by providing a high-quality youth offer across the region through our own direct youth work services and by working with and supporting our member network of organisations. Our services include youth groups, activities, programmes and funding. We work with young people aged between 11-25, many who face significant socio-economic inequalities including low household income, lack of opportunities and poor safety in their local communities.
In 10 years, North East Local Authorities have reduced spend on youth services by up to 96% in some areas which has led to a significant lack of youth work provision. This correlates with poorer mental health, increased crime rates amongst young people and anti-social behaviour. For example, the North East has the highest rate of proven offences amongst children aged 10-17 in all of England and Wales (8.2 per 1,000). As well as economic factors, young people are having a harder time with low self-esteem, confidence and wellbeing following the pandemic, with a recent NHS report evidencing that child referrals for mental health care were up by 39% in 2022 in England.
Providing a Safe and Supportive Space
One of the fundamental aspects of youth work is creating a safe and supportive space for young people to express themselves freely. This nurturing environment allows them to build trust with youth workers and peers, supporting their emotional wellbeing and fostering a sense of belonging within their communities.
Encouraging Personal and Social Development
Youth work encourages personal and social development by equipping young people with essential life skills. These skills include communication, problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making, which are vital for their successful transition into adulthood and the workforce.
Addressing Complex Health and Wellbeing Needs
Young people face various challenges related to health and wellbeing, including mental health, drug and alcohol abuse and lack of suitable employment opportunities. Youth work addresses these complex needs by offering support services to improve the overall wellbeing of young people. NE Youth also work with employers, to support their young workforce with the developmental skills they may be lacking, to prepare them for the world of work.
Promoting Social Inclusion and Diversity
Youth work celebrates diversity and promotes social inclusion by embracing young people from various backgrounds, cultures and identities. By working together, young people learn to respect and appreciate differences, fostering a sense of unity and understanding.
Empowering Young People through Participation and Leadership
Youth work empowers young people by involving them in decision-making processes and offering leadership opportunities. Through youth-led initiatives and projects, young individuals gain valuable experiences, boost their confidence, and take ownership of their futures. Examples of this include social action projects, where young people are given the opportunity to develop an event, campaign or project around something that matters to them. Developing Active Citizenship
Youth work fosters active citizenship by encouraging young people to engage in community-based activities and volunteering. By participating in projects that address local issues, young people become active agents of change, contributing positively to their communities. This also builds their life skills and experiences, leading them to have more positive employability prospects.
Youth work serves as a catalyst for positive change in the lives of young people and the communities they belong to. By providing a safe and supportive space, fostering personal and social development, addressing complex health and wellbeing needs, promoting diversity and inclusion, and empowering young people through participation and leadership, youth work plays a crucial role in building a brighter future for generations to come. As we continue to invest in youth work, we invest in empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators and changemakers.
Please help us to make a positive difference to the lives of young people.
