North East Chamber of Commerce response to proposed investment in the region’s creative industries
Date published:
In response to proposals due to be considered by the North East Combined Authority cabinet next week to invest £104m in the region’s creative industries, including support for Crown Works Studios in Sunderland and the Gateshead Quays development, John McCabe, chief executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce, said:
“The North East has a proud and growing creative economy, with world-class talent across film, television, music, digital content and live events. Supporting this sector is not only about culture. It is also about economic growth, job creation and building a more diverse regional economy.
“If approved, this investment would be a positive signal of intent. After several years of debate around projects such as Crown Works Studios and Gateshead Quays, businesses will welcome renewed momentum and the prospect that construction could begin later this year.
“These developments could create new opportunities for North East companies across a wide supply chain, from construction and engineering through to hospitality, events, digital services and the wider visitor economy.
“At the same time, it is clear that the schemes now progressing are not quite as large as some of the earliest ambitions that were originally discussed. The priority now must be ensuring they create meaningful economic opportunities for businesses and communities across the region.
“The North East has the talent and ambition to build a globally recognised creative economy, outside of London and Manchester. Investments like this can help unlock that potential, and we look forward to working with our members across the region to ensure these developments become a reality.”
