Nirvana Europe Accelerates Digital Transformation with NPIF II – NEL Investment
A sports travel business founded as the official travel and accommodation partner to the Great North Run is set to accelerate its next phase of growth following a six-figure investment from NPIF II – NEL Debt Finance, managed by NEL Fund Managers as part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II).
Founded in 1999, Nirvana Europe has grown into a specialist event travel, accommodation, and logistics provider, with long-standing relationships across the endurance sports sector and a strong global presence in triathlon and IRONMAN travel.
NEL first invested in Nirvana Europe in 2024 to support its expansion into North America, providing the business with the backing to accelerate its growth in the region. Since then, North America has grown to represent a significant share of Nirvana’s turnover, while the number of events the business supports each year has increased from 70 to 180 and its geographic reach has expanded to customers across 120 countries.
The latest NPIF II – NEL investment will support a major transformation programme focused on technology, data, and commercial development, with the finance being used to introduce a new sales and booking platform, strengthen marketing and data capabilities, expand the team and create capacity to pursue new partnerships, events and commercial opportunities.
The strategic programme roll-out will help Nirvana Europe build a more scalable business, improve operational efficiency, and enhance the customer experience, creating a stronger platform for long-term growth.
Nigel Morris, Managing Director at Nirvana Europe says: “We’re investing significantly in our technology, our people, and our commercial capability, which will allow us to operate more efficiently, make better use of our data and ultimately deliver an even better experience for our customers.
“We’ve had a really positive experience working with NEL. From the outset, the team took the time to properly understand Nirvana, our ambitions and what we are trying to achieve over the next few years. This investment gives us the ability to accelerate a transformation that is already well underway across the business.
“We see a significant opportunity to grow Nirvana over the coming years, both through our existing partnerships and by winning new business and having NEL supporting us on that journey gives us a really strong platform from which to do that.”
Jane Siddle, Senior Investment Executive at NEL, adds: “Nirvana is a highly specialised event travel company, providing bespoke travel and accommodation packages for sporting and leisure events worldwide. The business holds long-standing official travel partner status with leading organisations including IRONMAN, British Triathlon and USA Triathlon, alongside a number of other major sporting bodies. These enduring partnerships are testament to the quality of service, operational excellence and consistent delivery that Nirvana provides.
“The management team approached NEL for additional funding with a clear and well-defined growth strategy, focused not only on increasing scale but also on strengthening the operational and organisational foundations of the business. This disciplined approach will ensure that growth is both sustainable and scalable over the long term.
“I have strong confidence in the Nirvana management team and their ability to execute this strategy, and I look forward to continuing to support the business as it delivers on its growth ambitions, expands its market position and reinforces its reputation as a leader within its niche sector.”
Sarah Newbould, Senior Investment Manager at the British Business Bank, said: “Nirvana Europe has built an impressive international business from its base in the North East and its continued growth demonstrates the potential of ambitious businesses to expand into new markets. Through NPIF II, we’re committed to supporting businesses as they invest in technology and people, helping to build the capacity to grow sustainably and create further opportunities in the region.”
Operated by the British Business Bank, the £660m Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II covers the entire North of England and provides loans from £25,000 to £2m, alongside equity investments of up to £5m, to help smaller businesses start up, scale up and stay ahead.
The fund aims to drive sustainable economic growth by supporting innovation, creating local opportunity and increasing the supply and diversity of finance available to smaller businesses across the region. It helps address barriers to accessing finance and supports businesses that may otherwise struggle to secure investment.
NEL Fund Managers also manages NPIF II – NEL Smaller Loans, which provides investments of between £25,000 and £100,000 to support the growth ambitions of emerging and established businesses.
