Taking a bigger bite out of regional growth as Greggs joins Chamber Partners

Greggs has become a Chamber Partner member, strengthening its commitment to supporting the long-term success and prosperity of the region it has proudly called home for more than 80 years.

Headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne, Greggs has grown from a single bakery on Gosforth High Street in 1951 into a national food to go retailer with more than 2,700 shops across the UK and annual sales exceeding £2bn.

Despite its national footprint, the business remains firmly rooted in the North East and is committed to investing in its people, communities and regional economy.

As a Partner, Greggs will work alongside North East businesses and organisations to influence policy, share expertise and contribute to discussions that help shape the region’s future.

The partnership aligns closely with our Unlocking the North East Economy policy plan, particularly its focus on securing quality jobs and creating the conditions for a happier, healthier region.

Roisin Currie, chief executive of Greggs, said: “Greggs has proudly called the North East home since our beginnings on Gosforth High Street in 1951. While we’ve grown into a national business, our roots remain firmly in this region and we’re passionate about supporting its future success.

“Joining the North East Chamber of Commerce as a Partner member allows us to work even more closely with organisations that share our ambition to create opportunity, support communities and drive sustainable economic growth across the region.”

Roisin added: “The North East has played a vital role in Greggs’ story, and we're looking forward to contributing our voice, experience and support to the Chamber’s work as it champions businesses and helps unlock the region’s full potential.”

The Chamber’s business-led policy plan highlights the importance of creating high-quality employment, supporting thriving communities and fostering collaboration between employers to drive sustainable regional growth.

Greggs’ longstanding investment in skills, employment, community wellbeing and partnership working reflects these ambitions and demonstrates how business can play a leading role in creating lasting social and economic value.

Erin Newey, strategic partnerships manager at the Chamber, said: “Greggs is one of the North East’s most iconic businesses and a company whose values closely align with our vision for a stronger, more inclusive regional economy. Their commitment to creating quality employment, investing in future talent and supporting healthier communities makes them a fantastic addition to our growing community of Partner members.

“Having a business with such strong regional roots and national influence around the table will strengthen the conversations we’re leading on behalf of members. We look forward to working together to champion the North East and create the conditions for businesses and communities to thrive.”

Greggs is one of the UK’s largest retail employers and continues to provide opportunities for people across the region.

Through The Greggs Pledge, the business works to build stronger, healthier communities by supporting charitable partnerships, expanding healthier food choices and investing in programmes that help communities facing financial challenges and tackle inequality.

Each year, Greggs donates 1% of its annual profits to The Greggs Foundation, which supports schools, families and community organisations through initiatives including Feeding Brighter Futures and Relief grants.

The company has also supported Children’s Cancer North for more than four decades, helping to raise millions of pounds for research and family support.

Greggs joins Chamber Partners at a time when collaboration between business, policymakers and regional partners is key to unlocking the region’s potential. By working together, businesses can help create the conditions for sustainable economic growth, thriving high streets, stronger communities and greater opportunity for everyone across the North East.
