Newcastle art gallery opens its first exhibition in Northumberland this October
Ad Gefrin hosts The Biscuit Factory in a new Northumbrian partnership that blends contemporary art with ancient traditions.
Newcastle art gallery The Biscuit Factory, will be exhibiting outside of its Ouseburn home for the first time in its 24 year history this Autumn/Winter. From 23 October the renowned independent commercial gallery is launching its inaugural exhibition as part of a new partnership with Northumberland distiller and visitor destination; Ad Gefrin.
Guided by a belief in making with care, in valuing process as much as outcome, the partnership will unfold through exhibitions, conversations and gatherings that bring contemporary art and culture into dialogue with tradition, heritage and a strong connection to place.
Three artists have been selected to showcase their work as part of the first exhibition titled ‘Modern Classics’. A collection of landscape and still life paintings the exhibition explores light and atmosphere, the everyday and the elemental. Each artist works with traditional techniques to create distinctly contemporary pieces, bringing a new creative perspective to Ad Gefrin.
Director at The Biscuit Factory, Rachel Brown says of the partnership: “Bringing a small piece of the gallery to Northumberland has long been an ambition of ours, and Ad Gefrin are the ideal partners with which to explore this opportunity. From the care and attention that has been poured into the facility itself, the craft behind the processes within the distillery, and the immense respect to the heritage of their location; there could not be a closer alignment with the values that we see in how original art is conceived and created. We’re very excited to see how the exhibition, and an ongoing partnership, will be received in Northumberland.”
The Modern Classics exhibition comprises work by artists Angelo Murphy, Garry Courtnell, and Paula Dunn, the latter of whom will open the exhibition to the public with an in-person artist Q&A on Friday 23 October. From then, the exhibition will remain on display until 13 December, with all pieces available for purchase during the showcase, to be delivered just in time for festive celebrations as the year wanes.
Co-founder of Ad Gefrin Anglo-Saxon Museum and Whisky Distillery, Eileen Ferguson comments: “We’ve always lovedThe Biscuit Factory as a family, and to be able to extend our hospitality to them, their artists, and art-lovers alike in Northumberland is personally very special. From the very beginning we have championed our regional culture. The creativity and passion invested in whisky making means we recognise a genuine synergy with The Biscuit Factory. We have been delighted to work with emerging North East artists in launching our Crǣft Single Cask Single Malt Series and this partnership comes at the perfect time to demonstrate our further commitment to sharing original art.”
Modern Classics is on display at Ad Gefrin Anglo Saxon Museum and Whisky Distillery in Wooler from Friday 23 October - Sunday 13 December. The exhibition is free to view, located in the public spaces and within Bēodern restaurant.
The collection can also be found online at thebiscuitfactory.com from 23 October.
Ad Gefrin is open daily 10.30am - 5pm.
