Did you know the North East’s old coal mines could help heat your business?

As the need for environmental responsibility continues to grow, businesses across the North East have a clear opportunity to lead the way in building a more sustainable future.

Water is an essential resource for businesses across the North East, from manufacturers and food producers to tech firms and service providers. As we marked World Water Day on the 22nd of March, it’s an opportunity to reflect on how businesses can contribute to a more sustainable and resilient water future.

As we look towards a more sustainable future, one key factor often overlooked is gender equality.

On the 11th of February, the Chamber hosted the Sustainability Initiatives within the Plastics Industry event in collaboration with the British Plastics Federation (BPF), which provided valuable insights into the future of plastic recycling in the UK.

At our most recent engineering and manufacturing forum, hosted by Equinor in South Shields, we focussed on offshore wind and regional opportunities following the government’s industrial strategy.

We’re currently exploring the interest in the Chamber leading a delegation of exhibitors to the Global Energy Trade Show taking place in Calgary, Canada from 10-12 June 2025.

The Chamber held an event which explored how businesses can practically finance a more sustainable future. 

The European Commission has confirmed that the Deforestation Regulation (EU 2023/1115) will take effect for large companies at the end of the year, aiming to reduce global deforestation and promote sustainable consumption within the EU.

With elections coming up soon on the 2 May for the North East Mayor, here is a briefing note for members on the trailblazer deal for the new North East Mayoral Combined Authority (NEMCA). This is an agreement between the government and the North East local authorities to deepen and extend the combined authority’s powers and will provide £100 million of new funding.
