National Grid joins Chamber to support North East growth
National Grid’s membership comes at an important time for the region, as investment in energy infrastructure, skills and innovation will play a vital role in delivering growth and supporting the transition to a cleaner, more resilient economy.
As part of The Great Grid Upgrade – the largest overhaul of the UK’s electricity network in generations – National Grid is investing in the North East’s energy infrastructure to help deliver cleaner, more affordable and secure home-grown power to homes, businesses and industry across the region and beyond. With national demand for electricity expected to double in the coming years, this work will ensure the grid is fit for the future and capable of supporting the UK’s transition to net zero.
In the North East, this investment will boost local economies, strengthen supply chains and create opportunities to develop the skills needed for the future energy workforce. Projects such as Eastern Green Link 1 will connect renewable power from offshore wind in the North Sea into the region, supporting clean growth and energy security for generations to come.
This builds on a strong foundation of work already taking place in the region. Through initiatives such as the North Sea Link interconnector – delivered by National Grid Ventures and Statnett, linking Northumberland to Norway – the company has helped strengthen the UK’s and the North East’s energy security while supporting local jobs, skills and community projects during its development and operation.
Steve Knight-Gregson, head of external affairs for English regions at National Grid, said, “We’re delighted to join the North East Chamber of Commerce and to work with its members to support the region’s growth, sustainability and innovation.
“National Grid already has a strong track record in the North East through the NSL interconnector in Northumberland, and we’re building on this with new projects like Eastern Green Link 1 that will bring even more clean energy from the North Sea into the region.
“The Great Grid Upgrade is about creating a grid that’s fit for the future, by boosting energy security, supporting local supply chains and opening up new skills opportunities so the North East can continue to help lead the way in Britain’s energy transition.”
Erin Newey, strategic partnerships manager at the North East Chamber of Commerce, added,“We’re pleased to welcome National Grid as a Partner member and to work together to unlock the North East’s potential.
“Energy is at the heart of the region’s growth and competitiveness. National Grid’s ongoing investment in the North East demonstrates the scale of ambition needed to deliver cleaner power, new skills and greater opportunities for businesses and communities across the region.”
The Chamber’s Partner membership network brings together 25 leading organisations committed to driving growth, sustainability and innovation across the region. Working collectively on behalf of the wider business community, Partners help to shape a stronger, fairer North East. As a Partner, National Grid will connect with senior leaders from across the region to share insight, influence policy and collaborate on the North East’s long-term growth priorities.
