Pride in the workplace: championing inclusivity in the North East

As Pride Month begins, businesses across the North East have a unique opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. More than just a celebration, Pride is a reminder that every employee deserves to feel respected, safe and valued for who they are.

The North East has made great strides in championing equality, but there is still work to be done. According to Stonewall, over a third of LGBTQ+ staff hide their identity at work for fear of discrimination. For many, this leads to reduced wellbeing, lower productivity and a sense of isolation. Businesses play a key role in changing that narrative.

Inclusivity is not just a matter of policy; it’s about fostering a culture where people feel they truly belong. From small enterprises to larger employers, the foundations of inclusive workplaces begin with leadership. When senior leaders actively support LGBTQ+ visibility -through initiatives, open dialogue or training – it sends a clear message of solidarity.

Practical steps can also make a significant impact. Reviewing workplace policies to ensure they are inclusive of gender identity and sexual orientation, offering employee resource groups, using inclusive language and providing unconscious bias training are all effective measures. Supporting local Pride events and partnering with LGBTQ+ organisations in the region can also strengthen community ties and demonstrate genuine commitment.

Inclusivity drives innovation, boosts morale and attracts diverse talent. In a region known for its resilience, creativity, and community spirit, embracing workplace diversity is not just the right thing to do but it makes good business sense.
